Coast Guard investigates tank vessel allision with bridge

SAN FRANCISCO - The U.S. Coast Guard responded to the report of a tank vessel striking the Union Pacific and Benicia-Martinez Highway bridges at approximately 5:10 this evening.

The Panamanian flagged Tank Vessel Kriti Jade was enroute from the Tesoro Avon refinery in Martinez to Anchorage 9 in San Francisco when the upper portion of its navigational mast made contact with the two bridges. The vessel was immediately ordered to proceed to Anchorage 9 where it will be boarded by a team of Coast Guard investigators.

Initial reports from Union Pacific and Cal Trans indicate that damage to the bridges is minor and cosmetic in nature. The extent of damage to the ship has not yet been fully evaluated but appears to be minor.
