Background: This appeal presented a question of first impression in this circuit concerning the timeliness of a seaman's suit for maintenance and cure.
The plaintiff, Andrew Cunningham, injured his back on July 10, 1998, while serving as a crewman aboard a ship owned by the defendant, Interlake Steamship Company ("Interlake"). Cunningham filed suit for maintenance and cure, as well as for harm caused by Interlake's negligence and the ship's unseaworthiness.

Background: This case arose out of an injury that occurred while the plaintiff, Gregory Edmond, was employed as an oiler aboard the derrick barge DB WILLIAM KALLOP. The barge was located off the coast of Houma, Louisiana.

Background: Plaintiff Christopher Batiste filed suit against defendant Superior Energy Services, LLC ("Superior").
On November 22, 2006, Batiste was employed as a deckhand aboard the M/V Fortitude. This vessel was owned and operated by Superior. Batiste was performing his assigned duties, which included changing a hose on a water pump aboard the vessel. The captain of the vessel asked Batiste and another deckhand to do the job, but the other deckhand was cooking, so Batiste was sent to do the job alone.

Background:
The plaintiff, Martin Nunez ("Seaman") was injured while working as a crew member of the dredge, the George D. Williams. The dredge was owned and operated by the defendant, Weeks Marine ("Employer").
Seaman filed suit against his employer, and later amended his complaint to include Atlantic Sounding Company. Seaman claimed damages under the Jones Act and general maritime law, predicated on negligence and unseaworthiness of the vessel, as well as maintenance and cure.
